Introducing the first edition of our Middle East sustainability industry survey ‘Building a Sustainable Future in the Middle East.’
The countdown is now on for the world's biggest climate change conference, COP28, taking place in Dubai in November and December 2023, and as such, all eyes are now on the United Arab Emirates and the wider Middle East. Yet, as awareness grows and sustainability becomes an increasingly pressing issue, there can be no more business as usual for the construction sector.
COP28 will likely bring rapid change in regulation and it won’t be the last catalyst to do so. The construction industry must prepare itself to be on the front foot when changes come down the track, potentially thick and fast.
Through our survey, we aim to assess the Middle East construction market's comprehension of net-zero adoption, investigate how COP28 is anticipated to transform the future of the industry in-region and understand actions needed now to pave the way for a greener future. Survey respondents include a mix of senior stakeholders and decision-makers across the construction industry in the Middle East with both strategic and delivery responsibilities.
The data from our survey, along with secondary data taken from a selection of reliable industry sources, has been used to inform this report, within which we attempt to identify key decarbonisation and sustainability constraints that must be addressed for the industry to deliver the impact reductions that are needed.
Alongside recommendations for actions and next steps, our in-region sustainability consulting team also share their expert knowledge, judgements, and future outlooks for the sustainability of the industry in the Middle East.
“With the right mindset and sufficient understanding of sustainable project delivery, the construction sector can have a significant positive impact on the Middle East's drive to reach net zero.”
Lindsey Malcolm, Sustainability Lead, Middle East
